About My Students
The students have autism and emotional disturbance. They are eager to get out to the schoolyard to fly kites.
I informed them that my kites are old and so we searched ways together to attain more. We asked our school to buy us more but the budget is gone at this point in the school year.. We need kites to have a kite event. They recall having a previous kite event.
Prior to the actual kite event, students will create reading comprehension tasks, writing tasks and speaking and listening tasks to encourage social skill development which is very difficult for these students. The kite event will encourage life long hobbies that will give these students an outlet for enjoyment later on in life.
In Their Own Words
We want to have a kite event. We love kites and learn about them in April for National Kite month. Our teacher likes kites and has taught us about them. We have a big problem because our kites we used to fly are old. They were flying too many times and we need new ones that are better.
We are proud to help Miss K because we are helping her order new ones. She said she can not buy any new ones because she already bought the old ones and they don't fly anymore. We can invite our other teachers to watch our kite event from the school building windows and it will be like a show for kites. They look so pretty. Miss K gives us VIKF awards. This means we are Very Important Kite Flyers.
We fly kites and learn to work together because 2 people fly the kites. We can not run into each other so we have to pay attention. We have to work hard and fly our kites. The kids in our class work with the kids in the smaller special education classes and we are their mentors. Its fun and we learn.
