This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All students are not created equal, but they do have three things in common: a desire to be included, a want to be successful in school, and a need to have friendships. Sensory Regulation disorders often make this difficult. We want ALL of our students to have every opportunity possible to succeed.

We are a public charter school and have a very diverse student population.

We have students from many different countries and whose families have a variety of socioeconomic needs. Our special education population makes up 20% of our total enrollment. We are proud to be a full inclusion school and all students are taught in general education classrooms. Students at our school, supported by the Charter’s Learning Community, will use their unique attributes to achieve a broad base of knowledge integrated with the arts and technology. In order to achieve success on a global scale and be well prepared as 21st century learners, our school will create a diverse community of engaged citizens who treat others with respect, value friendships, and demonstrate a work ethic that exemplifies perseverance and responsibility.

My Project

My students need Sensory Vests, Safe chew toys, vibrating accessories, and noise reduction earphones as they are great for young kids by allowing them to move in place while attending to classwork. A weighted vest provides pressure and can help to relieve anxiety by regulating the sensory system when it is overstimulated. Safe chewing items relieve the need to chew, are safe for teeth, socially acceptable, allowed in classrooms, increase attention, lower anxiety levels, and has been shown to enhance concentration skills in children constantly seeking sensory input. Noise reduction headphones help to drown out stimulus in the classroom that interferes with learning.

My students need products that help them "normalize" the feeling of being different.

Sensory tools and supports will help us to achieve a profound difference in participation levels and academic performance in our students. Inclusion goes farther than mainstreaming in assuring that children will be educated daily with their non-disabled peers, allowing the enhanced development of social and academic skills that are so important to their happiness and success as adults.
