Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Living in an urban area, my students do not know where their food comes from. We are learning how to grow things and harvest. We do community service by donating our produce to the food bank.

My students are amazing!

They don't get much of a chance to dig in a garden because there is little room in our neighborhood to do so. They have limited life experiences due to a variety of factors, but that does not stop them from having a desire to learn. These students transform when we are in the garden! They learn how to care for something that starts from a seed and revel in the harvest. Every one of them gets excited when we see the fruits of our labor appear. It's fun to watch them discover what they are capable of. I hope to continue this project every year as it means so much to Kino and the food bank.

My Project

Students will design the planting for the garden boxes, using information on the seed packets to determine spacing, depth, and planting times. The tools will be used to plant the seeds correctly. When we water the plants, the timer will deliver the amount of water for the time the students have calculated based on plant needs. Each of the three raised boxes will be divided by plant and the irrigation will be configured based on the amount of water each crop requires. Students will calculate the amount of water optimal for the type of produce being grown. The tools will also help us harvest the crops when they are ready.

As a child, I remember planting seeds in a corner of my yard where I lived in Staten Island, New York.

Even though it was an urban setting, I was able to grow sunflowers and marigolds. I felt so proud that I successfully grew flowers! I want my students to experience the same feeling. It seems like such a small thing, but it feels so good to these students to accomplish this task. Some of the families at our school use the local food bank, so the students get to give back to the community.
