My Students
James Bryce said, "The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it."
I agree with this quote about reading because after teaching reading for four years, I realize that reading a book is worthless if the students can't take something worthwhile away from the experience.
When I was in elementary school, I loathed reading, but something happened that made a difference.
Probably very few people can remember the actual moment when their love of reading was born...but I do! It was in 6th grade, and it happened on the 2nd day of listening to my teacher read a book to the class. It was "Little Women." It was like I suddenly discovered another world! The love of reading is still with me, and it makes me sad that so many children never give it a chance. My top goal as a teacher is to get my students to enjoy reading because it is the key to being successful in life. Also, success in reading leads to success in all subjects.
I teach 4th grade in a rural school in Tennessee. Our school is very tiny--only 125 students in grades K-8. It is truly my privilege to teach in the community where I grew up. I have a true vested interest in my school and our students. Our community and school consists mostly low-income Caucasian families.
My Project
Because of the low diversity in our school, some of the resources in the King series of books I have requested represent various ethnicity's, and the characters come from a variety of family structures. My students need books like these. These particular books are geared toward my struggling readers.
My students also need other resources to help them complete projects about early Tennessee leaders. Our class will use these books for literacy/social studies projects. Other resources we need are daily language journals and four audio books. Finally, I am requesting a special resource that will be used by students who have been absent. Many times, we read books throughout the day; sometimes we listen to the books on CD. The small student CD players will help these students catch up after an illness. The players can be sent home if needed. My experience is that many of my struggling readers are frequently absent, so the players will be a tremendous help.
Thank you so much for considering this important project.
I have requested several resources, many of which will help my struggling students in reading. On a personal note, the DonorsChoose organization has shaped my classroom into one of which I'm extremely proud. My kids love the activities and projects...without the extra resources that donors have provided for us, we would be forced to use only the textbook. Thank you for valuing education and helping me become a better teacher.
