I teach first through third grade art in a high-needs community. Our classroom has very limited art supplies. I was given $100 this year that I spent on drawing paper, pencils, and erasers. I later bought, with personal funds, crayons for each seat in the room. Those crayons are already short nubs.
A student brought in a copy of a Warhol print of Michael Jackson. Many students thought the contrasting color combinations were "hot," as they like to say. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to teach them about Warhol, pop art, and self-portraits.
To complete this project, I need four primary colors of construction paper, and new crayons. Not only will this introduce these students to a new style of art, but the supplies will allow us to continue to work with color on other future projects.
Your help will allow these students to view themselves as pop celebrities like Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, and other celebrities featured in Warhol paintings. Many of these students rarely get a chance to view themselves in a positive manner due to circumstances beyond their control.
