This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
This table group in art has gotten together because they are the most mature students in the class and are good examples to the rest of the class. They brighten my day with their enthusiasm and energy. They came up for the idea to paint the lockers outside the classroom like the tiles walls of the halls so it will look like a tile wall hall. I had mentioned painting the walls earlier in the year and got side tracked with other projects. They like the idea of getting out of the classroom and making something useful with painting that they all like to do in the classroom. It seems like a healthy, active way of using their art skills that they have learned.
These are very happy students and responsible. They seem older then the rest of the class but they aren't. We need an excuse to get off our chairs and on our feet to make art. This age can sit still for so long.
Students will draw 20 orphans from Russia, we will send them to The Memory Project, they will deliver the portraits to Russia, make a video and send us the video to watch of the orphans receiving their portraits. As orphans they don't have photographs of themselves and having a portrait made for them by another person their age in another country is very valuable to them.
Drawing a person, you become acquainted with them and get to know them though they live across the world from these students. They have less than they have though the students at this title one school do not have a lot either. Making something to give to someone else that you made gives the giver a feeling of pride in the product they will make and give and a feeling of having done something for the bigger community/world.
Students learn about these orphans and their country and were they are from.
In Their Own Words
We picked Russian orphans to draw and send with the Memory Project. There were a lot of different countries to choose from. I like drawing people and giving them to the kids will be special for them.
The goals we are trying to accomplish with this project are:
1. drawing Russian students
2. getting better at drawing portraits
3. understanding and helping these students In Russia by giving them a drawn picture.
4. Helping us as well to think about someone else other than ourselves and our small problems.
My friends and I will tell about the Russian orphans and show where Russia is on the map. We will explain about why they are in orphan homes an not with parents. We will pick videos on Youtube that show how to draw faces. We can make a packet with the teacher with materials for each student to do this assignment. We can show how we drew the orphans and why we included things in the background. What is means to us and what it will mean to the orphan who is having their portrait drawn.
This project is important to me and my school community because we are not being selfish but thinking about others and this is good for our emotional health. To think of someone not "me". We will be examples for kids in our class to follow.
The problem or challenge the project will solve- people are all alike and not to pick on someone because they look different. We will look at these 20 kids and learn about them. The Russian orphans will be understood and valued by the drawings we will give them.
