Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students are a diverse group of learners from all different backgrounds and they bring so much energy to the classroom.

My students have a wealth of personality and eagerness to learn, but not all of them come prepared with the same tools to be successful.

We have a lot of students who come to school without privileges many of us take for granted.

Some of our students come without school supplies, books, and sometimes lack a lot of background knowledge or real life experiences that their peers are equipped with. The students in my desks range from virtual non readers to avid readers, and their interests are just as varied. We are a school-wide Title 1 building in the district and our funding allows for a lot of different programs and resources for our students. Yet that funding doesn't allow every request to be honored. Our school is filled with hard working teachers who spend hours preparing for classes, spend money out of their own pockets, and care passionately about our school and students. We have a challenging population and age group, and we love our students, school, and staff.

My Project

I want to model for the students and be the leader of a kindness movement in our community. Kindness Rocks movements are popping up all over and we want to take part in it by reading stories of kindness, acceptance, overcoming obstacles, and perseverance. Then, I want to transfer those themes and messages onto painting rocks for others in the community to find when they least expect it.

The idea behind the Winston Rocks movement matches our theme this year of being "Winspired," which means to be inspired by the great things that are happening at our school.

I see this as an opportunity to not only do something fun and educational, but something relatable and tangible for our students. The goal is for students to write messages that spread love and kindness onto their rocks, and paint them in bright and beautiful ways. They then take their rocks out into the community and place them in little spots for others to find and be inspired, comforted, or just plain happy! When someone finds a rock, we will ask them to post a picture on social media or our Google Classroom community with the hashtag #Winspired or #WinstonRocks, so we can see our kindness spreading around the neighborhood and community. These students need to be a part of something bigger, and I feel this is an engaging and exciting movement to be a part of in our school and in our community.

Once we plant those first rocks, I envision us pairing up with some of our Elementary school classes to lead them through another round of reading, painting, and sharing. #Winspired #WinstonRocks
