Help me give my students moments of kindness. Through role play with stuffed animals and the second step emotional learning program students will learn about empathy and compassion.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I will use the Second Step lesson kit to teach kindness, empathy, emotional resilience and regulation. This program is a step-by-step curriculum that empowers children in the pathway to understanding others through visuals, mind exercises and conversations in a guided lesson with the help of two stuffed animals, a snail called “slowdown snail “ and a puppy called “impulsive puppy.” It is a wonderful program that carefully brings up emotions that can be hard to see and expressed in a controlled environment with the guide of an adult. The plushies that I’m ordering will bring a sense of softness and connection to my lessons.
Many times, little kids need something to hold on when processing feelings and learning about others through this program.
It can be scary and uncomfortable to be vulnerable and trustworthy with their emotions. A little stuffy can be the little thing that helps them relax and learn about anger, sadness, anxiety, happiness etc. My favorite part of these lessons is when they hear others have gone through similar experiences and that there is hope for them together. I also love when they learn that they have choices on how to react when angry or sad.
Another tool I will also be using the book Each Kindness because it demonstrates in such a beautiful way how kindness works and how being mean can have such lasting effects on others. The community I serve many times is going through hunger, money problems and all types of abuse, not to mention regular human suffering. We are all humans and all have emotions to manage so why not give my students the opportunity to learn and transfer this information to their communities with a clean, sensory welcoming environment to grow emotionally as well as academically.
