My students need versatile room dividers to create a Kindness Corner filled with creative play items for role play, books about kindness and an easel to display books read to them.
I teach in a K-12 public school in a very small, mountainous, rural town. This year I will be teaching the kindergartners and first graders in a combination class.
These students come from very diverse backgrounds (ESL, low socio-economics, blended families) and learning social skills is a top priority for their success in school and in the community.
We need kindness more than ever in this world, for kids to extend genuine kindness that isn’t rewarded with stickers or a high-five. Kindness that’s done when no one is looking.
More importantly, we need kids to stick up for others. To not look the other way when they see someone needs their help, and to feel empathy for those around them.
Providing a safe, and nurturing environment in which they are comfortable to take academic and social risks and still feel supported is my main goal for the school year. I want our classroom to be inviting, and safe so they will feel loved and confident in who they are.
My Project
I teach kindness throughout the school year, but I'd like to create a special corner of the room where students can learn and role play what kindness means. The room dividers will help define the area and the divider to write on will provide a visual board for them to interact with using magnetic letters and wipe off pens.
As always, I turn to children’s stories about helping others to emphasize the values of kindness I want them to learn.
These children’s books are fantastic talking points to discuss what it means to be kind, and the importance of being so.
