Kindness Corner- Remembering My Sister

Help me give my students the opportunity to have a reading nook in our library to learn more about kindness, how to navigate their grief, and to better understand their peers with epilepsy.

My Project

During the worst year of my life, my fifth grade students rallied around me and saved me. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have finished out my teaching contract.

My sister died unexpectedly from epilepsy Feb.

She was 32 and expecting her second child, a son, in July, leaving behind a 2-year-old daughter and a husband. She worked as a school psychologist at a school in Connecticut and her big thing was kindness, social-emotional learning, and overall being a good human.

Since her passing, I have been trying my best to keep her spirit alive by ensuring her legacy stays alive and her teaching of those values stay at the forefront.

I want to create a book nook in our school's library with cushioned seating and books, where kids can go and read about the importance of kindness and having empathy- something our world desperately needs a refresher on.

We also have several kiddos who have lost a parent recently who are on their own grief journey and we currently don't have anything in our library for them.

In addition, there are several students in our population who have epilepsy and it's important for kids to not be afraid and to equip them with knowledge to 1. Better understand themselves and 2. Be an advocate for others. Please help me make this memorial space a reality.
