My Project

For adults with developmental disabilities, a higher level of autonomy depends upon their ability to complete necessary job and life skills with minimum supervision. Job skills are vital for both social interaction and becoming part of the workforce. It is also important for establishing a good quality of life. Most developmentally disabled adults can learn the basics of proper food preparation with clear, succinct instruction. Teaching basic food preparation takes good planning, modeling and using prompts.

Job and life skills for adults with developmental disabilities are vital skills to possess to be a successful part of society.

In order to develop these skills, our school-to-work class will be starting "The Kindness Cafe." Students will learn the basics of food preparation, communication skills, conflict management, productivity, problem solving, critical thinking, professionalism, time management, attention to detail and working with others.

The Kindness Cafe will provide students a unique opportunity to learn life skills which will translate to life outside of school and into adulthood. Our students have unique challenges given their intellectual and physical disabilities. Through the Kindness Cafe’s educational experiences students will build self-esteem, self-determination, develop career experiences, and enrich communication skills.

Equally as important, our goal is to create a team atmosphere so students feel connected and grasp how to be part of a collaborative team environment. As team members, students will learn how to be encouraging of others' differences and opinions, develop mutual accountability, become better at decision making and problem solving which will ultimately enhance team performance.

The overall goal of the Kindness Cafe is to assist students in post-school transition and functional job skills. Students will increase their proficiency in skills related to preparation for adult life, career education, self-determination, and self-advocacy.
