This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
Britney, Ashley, Kimai and Jose are students that are leaders in the art classes. They are students I send students to with questions to be answered when I am busy. I know they will give them the help they need. They help pass out and collect sketchbooks and folders. They help students that are having difficulty with the iPad programs. Students go up to this leaders now with questions first before asking me.
The students work well together, though the are competing with each other. I would say they are good friends. If one of the other students is talking too much they will say something in Spanish so they will stop talking and work. This is a class with many non-English speaking students and 3 of these 4 students luckily speak Spanish.
I have three, art 1 classes that I will make board books about kindness for the pre-school school. They will write a story & draw pictures to go with the words. It's important this time of year to give & makes something to give for their emotional well being. Giving is getting as well but more rewarding. Making a book about kindness will help students to think about the value of kindness and this will help combat bullying at our school. Students will make 2 board books: one to keep and one to wrap and give to a child. Writing about kindness; they will have to think what that is and what it looks like when it is happening and then draw it. Valuing a quality such as kindness is important & will be a positive improvement for their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Making one for themselves is also giving themselves a present as well - being kind to themselves
In Their Own Words
We looked through the teachers art catalogues and Barebooks had board books. Our teacher found them on Amazon and it was easier to order through them. We tried to tie it in with the theme of mental health and kindness and Born This Way Foundations teachings so we could get matching donations. There is a lot of bullying at our school, so we wanted our friends to focus on the other idea side that fights bullying. We want everyone to make books about kindness and see what ideas they come up with. We make 2 books and give one to ourselves, being kind to ourselves and one to a child as being kind to them with a book about kindness. Our goals are to draw pictures about being kind and writing a story about being kind and then being kind and giving it to a pre-schooler to take home and keep for the holidays.
We will introduce the kindness books to our class and the 6th grade class. My friends and I will look up what the word kindness means and talk to our friends in the class about what It means. My friends and I will make books before the other kids so as to show them examples of what to do. My friends and I can maybe do skits about kindness and bullying.
What my friends and I will do if this project is funded: First my friends and I will wait for the package to come with the books. When it gets here we will open it and label each students name on 2 books. My friends and I will each quickly make an example and help the teacher while our classmates start writing their books. Maybe we can get the books together and bring them to the elementary school down the street or the preschool that is next door. My friends and I can read the books to the preschoolers that are at our school.
This will get preschool students interested in books and making them and being kind.
