Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an ETK (Expanded Transitional Kindergarten) Preschool program which is a full-day program. My enthusiastic PreK learners come to school ready to learn, build language, and explore. It is a program that introduces preschool age students (ages 4-5) to a public school setting. I teach at a Title I school in a small suburb outside of a major city. The majority of my students are Hispanic, and many come from low income families.

Most of my students either have not attended any preschool program or only attended a 2-3 hour a day program.

The ETK program allows parents who work to have a quality preschool program for six hours each day with a credentialed teacher. We offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. Many students have siblings at our school so it makes it easy for parents to drop off and pick up children.

My Project

It's never too early to begin instilling positive attitudes about acceptance and tolerance in children. Reading books about people from other cultures will increase cultural awareness, and help us become more respectful towards people with different backgrounds and perspectives. As a PreK teacher, I am currently teaching 12 students in a distance learning platform due to the pandemic. I strive to teach my students diversity and kindness with multicultural books I read aloud. I want my students to have the joy of reading by providing them a chance to borrow these books into their homes with their family once we are back in person.

Providing a multicultural literature will help students gain a better understanding of both their own cultures and the cultures of others.
