My students are from a high poverty area and do not have access to books. i have established reading centers with a large variety of activities. I would like them to have the chance to use technology in their daily reading. I want them to develop a love for media.
I have a class of 34 children in the first grade.
They have no opportunity to go to a library outside of the school and no computers at home. They are polite and interested in learning and love to borrow my books to take home and read. However there is so much more out there for them to read. I want them to be able to read magazines, newspapers, and other books. We have three computers in our class for all the students to access. Our school has no plans to expand that number. I need to fire up Kindles and let the children learn to use technology and read about the world. I need to have access to any story I want them to read.
My Project
I will be setting up the three Kindles in a center called Book Nook. I want the children to be able to go to the center and get a Kindle and choose a book or magazine to read in the center. They center will be on a rotation system so every child will have a time to use the Kindle and read. I think that using this type of technology might appeal to reluctant readers as well as avid readers. First graders are just learning to love reading and I want to help them develop that love. This center will be available to the students year after year and the books available will grow.
This opportunity will light that spark and help students in poverty learn that they can access the world through technology.
They will find books are more than paper and ink and that they can find many interesting books to read and enjoy. They will have access to magazines and research materials also. These students are our future and will learn to use more technology and may change the world with their ideas and interested lighted.
