This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing! We serve approximately 370 students in grades 6-8. Middle schoolers often say they hate reading. However, it's a beautiful thing to see students fully engaged in a story. Most of our students enter our school reading far below grade level. They don't hate reading...it's just difficult. We seek to build confidence in our students so they see themselves as readers.

It is a core goal of our school to foster a love of reading.

Our students read books of their choosing in at least one of their core classes each day. They compete to see which grade level can read the most. They smile for pictures when they reach milestones. And they champion their favorite books with one another. They begin to see themselves as readers!

My Project

Reading is freedom. Every kid deserves access to whatever book they want to read. Classroom libraries, while important, have concrete limitations due to the expense of physical books. Additionally, because of this lack of accessibility to multiple copies of books, students cannot read the same book at the same time. Unfortunately, this means reading crazes that marked some of our most impactful engagement with literature (think Harry Potter, the Divergent Series, and Hunger Games) can be lost on students with the most to gain from a broad cultural excitement to read. With our Kindle program, our students can read any book at any time, digging into their own super series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Dork Diaries and The Day My Butt Went Psyhco (that's the thing about freedom...no one said we had to like their books...).

With the start of our Kindle program, we have already seen a change in the number of kids reading and their engagement in their books.

Students read over 60 MILLION words this last school year, literally twice as much as the year before-a year without access to Kindles. Next year, our school will be expanding, and we will have twice as many students to welcome into our reading program.

It's clear: putting a Kindle in every student's hands is a powerful way to engage students and build their identities as readers. Kids are more invested in independent reading when they have choice. Independent reading builds knowledge of the world, which helps student reach success. Kindles will help our students read what truly interests them and help to make lifelong readers out of a new and powerful generation of change agents.
