Continuing this year, our school is transitioning to an eSTEM school (environmental, science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Students and staff are excited about the possibilities, yet we lack the financial resources to provide the technology.
This year I will have a variety of first grade students, each with their own unique energy.
They will arrive at school, awaiting new experiences, coming from many different backgrounds. Our school is part of the largest School District in Washington state. We have a wonderful program, in a building, lacking the resources necessary to provide the technology students need.
My Project
Currently, despite the fact we are becoming an eSTEM school, my students will have very little access to technology in the classroom. As an educator, it is my responsibility to tailor the learning in my classroom to fit the individual needs of all students. Having access to four Kindle Fires would allow me to provide an engaging way for students to work on literacy, with learning apps, and multiple copies of great literature that won't tear, or come apart at the seems from overuse. They will also have access to mathematics apps that will allow them to work at a level that is just right for them. Even though many children do have access to technology at home, it excites them in ways that a home made work sheet, or game, often will not. For some students, it will be the first experience with technology they will have.
This Kindle Fire project is so important because it will provide my students the chance to use 21st Century technology, and help continue to build our classroom library.
Without these tablets my students will have very little access to technology, in a city that is known as a technology hub!
