Kindle Oasis: A World of Literacy Awaits!

Help me give my students 5 Kindle Oasis E-Readers for our classroom library to have access to new books to enhance our ever changing library needs.

My Students

Our elementary school is one of five in the Quincy community. It is considered a high poverty, Title 1 School. Our funding has dwindled over the last few years, which makes it necessary to find other sources to provide what is necessary for our students. My fifth grade class is a very bright, hardworking, and giving group of students that are eager to learn. I have seen their love of reading this year through book talks with their peers, their discussion during reading groups, and the eagerness to read any new book we may get in our library full of dated books. My students have multi-range levels of reading, so it is important to have many books at many different levels to support their independent reading levels and interests, which a kindle would allow all book styles to be at their fingertips.

My Project

Margaret Fuller once said, “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” I believe this to be true for so many reasons and for this reason that is why I am vesting time in obtaining creative reading resources for my students. My students would benefit from access to endless amounts of books that they are interested in and not are not available in our current library. Students are always showing interest in new titles and by having a classroom set of Kindles this will provide them the opportunity to stay interested in the reading topics they love.

I believe that by having Kindles in my classroom it will motivate my students to become more avid readers, not only increasing their knowledge, but vocabulary and writing skills as well.

Also, by having true choice of the text they are interested in, in their hands, my students will increase their reading stamina, develop a richer vocabulary, and grow to love reading to strengthen their future. My hope is to help develop students that treasure books, and their worth, all while enjoying them.
