This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want to feel the sense of accomplishment and the thrill of finishing a novel! However, I have several students in my classes that are struggling with the English Language and I would love to give them an opportunity to read a book at their reading level with the anonymity of a Kindle.

My students are wonderful and creative.

They are very hardworking and want to learn. We are a very ethnically and linguistically diverse school. Many of my students are gifted and many others have special needs. Most of my students travel for an hour each way just to come to our school and they inspire me to continue providing meaningful learning opportunities to make valuable use of their time.

My Project

Many of my students begin their day at 5am and, due to extracurriculars, they do not return home until 7pm. This leaves very little time for my students to go to the library or study. Because so many of them commute to school, I want to provide them with an opportunity to use that commute time to read. This e-reader will be checked out to students, just like a book, so they can experience the thrill of finishing a novel! The e-reader allows my students to select books at their own reading level without any social risks. No one else will know what they are reading and that is so important for my struggling readers. In addition, the "Word Wise" feature of the Kindle can help my students gather contextual meaning from new vocabulary.

There is no better academic preparation than reading.

I want my students to fall in love with reading but I need your help. Some of my high schoolers read at such a low level that they would rather not read at all than risk the humiliation of carrying around a "baby" book in front of their friends. I know that once they start reading on the Kindle, their English reading and writing skills will improve tremendously. That's what the research says - and I can't wait to see it for myself!
