My students need a Kindle so they can read and listen to any book they like!

My Students
You've read the news: Nobody reads anymore.
No wonder many of my ninth graders say, "Reading is boring!"
I've taught the past 10 years at a public high school where 99 percent of the students are of color and 80 percent will be the first in their families to attend college.
Most of my students enter ninth grade way behind in reading, and it's my job to accelerate their skills. It's wonderful to see a seemingly indifferent 14-year-old get hooked on reading, and I'll do whatever I can to get them interested.
My Project
Audio books are a great way to motivate struggling readers because they allow students to access more challenging texts than otherwise possible.
The problem with audio books? They're way too expensive. The cheapest run about $20. That's if you can find them: Very few audio books tailored for teens are available.
That's why my dream is to have a Kindle in the classroom. The Kindle's text-to-speech feature instantly makes every book an audio book.
Even better, the Kindle allows books to be shared across six electronic devices. That means six students can simultaneously read (and listen to) the same title, whether on their iPod or computer.
With your help, I can envision having to tear my struggling readers' hands away from the classroom Kindle!
Please consider donating to this project. In a society where there's a gap between the reading "haves" and the non-reading "have-nots," it's crucial to get our students excited about books.
