My Students

A book can take you to any place imaginable! My students love to travel through literature with a book as their wings! One Kindle will take them on many amazing adventures!!!! Just think of where they could go!

Our school is a small public school that was just awarded the California Distinguished Award for our partnership with the community and implementing good intervention strategies to help those students in need.

We have many students from many different countries around the world, with varied life experiences. Being small is an advantage, in which all the students know each other well, work together and take care of each other. Parents help in the classroom and the community spirit flourishes. Students share books with one another and discuss what they read in literature circles. Some students have the means to have books at home and others go to the library to get their books. We are currently reading the same books as a class and learning how to make connections from these books to our lives, other books, and the world around us. One of my goals as a teacher is to truly instill a love of learning and a love of books in my students.

My Project

Providing this group of children with a kindle will open a world of reading for them. Kindles provide some scaffolding for reading that these students desperately need. The font size can be increased so a fourth grade level book with its small print and hundred word pages can be transformed into a book with larger print and pages that don't seem so overwhelming to read. When the students come to a word that they don't know, the comprehension of the text isn't inhibited because with just a touch of a button, they have the meaning immediately displayed. With the touch of a button I can download 5 books for the price of 1 and Amazon offers thousands of free books the students can read. The world is at the touch of a button.

I want these students to have as much access to good literature that they can have!

I want them to discuss good writing and get exposed to all the different genres that are out there. I don't want the fact that the books "look too hard and long" to keep them from reading! Kindles will give them access to many adventures! Buy them these wings!
