This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
First year immigrants and first generation Americans collaborate and discover the joys of reading with native English speakers every day in my 5th grade classroom. Many whom have just read their first entire chapter book are now devouring as many books as they can in their limited spare time.
Our public school is a happy community of pre-k through 8th grade.
We have an advantage in combining elementary with middle school because most of our students have multiple siblings in other grade levels. Most of my students' parents speak Spanish, and they rely on their children for translation. I tell my students often how valuable this skill is for career readiness. They are brilliant and precocious in how quickly they can process and apply the two languages with relative ease. Yet many of my students are heavily challenged when they need to have a full command of 5th grade level vocabulary words for state exams. When they are far behind, they need tutorials that add an extra hour in the morning plus another after school, and then another 4 on Saturdays. Far from stoic, they accept these challenges cheerfully and even express dismay when I tell them, "Congratulations, you don't need tutorials anymore!". Their winning attitudes inspire me every day.
My Project
I've been an Amazon Prime member since 2004. I have hundreds of purchased books plus with the Prime membership a library full of thousands of other titles. I also have Audible for listening, and a dashboard full of educational apps like Brainpop, Myon, SpellingCity, and more. With Kindle Fires, I can better meet the demands of my ravenous readers, from the ones who can read Hunger Games in a week to the ones who need to listen along with an audiobook, and pause for time to look up words that are new to them. They are already using a class set of laptops for emailing me their written assignments. With the camera features of the Kindle Fires, I would love to have them record themselves performing dramatic readings and save them to a shared cloud drive for their families to enjoy at home.
My students would be encouraged with the addition of the Kindle Fires to read and discover new titles beyond what our school library contains.
Our municipal public library has been closed for renovations for more than a year and its reopening time is uncertain. When those with home internet access share the cloud-based videos they've made with their families, the joy of literacy will even further extend into their home lives. Those without home internet access could borrow the devices for home use also.
