My projectneeds good measurement literature, tools and games that my kids can use in hands on learning. I also need a journal to help compile what our class has learned.
I am a Kindergarten teacher in a small North Carolina town. I am one of three kindergarten teachers in my school. One of the competency goals I must cover with my students is measurement. This is required by the NC standard course of study. I am limited on materials with which to teach measurement and am in need of some new materials. I feel that it is important for kindergarteners to learn to measure in nonstandard units at first and later learn to use some real measurement tools. I have limited measurement tools available. Our school is focusing on improving math scores on state testing and we really need to start working on this by enhancing math instruction in kindergarten.
I propose a project called Kinders Measure Up! to help my students learn about measurement. This project consists of first sharing good literature about measurement that will help my students learn the importance of measurement in our life. I will then introduce and have the kids participate in a vast offering of hands on experiences with measurement. Finally I will have my kids participate in some at home measurements. All results will be compiled in a class journal that can be shared.
To make this project work I am in need of some children's books on measurement to share with my students. I also need measurement manipulatives and game activities to help my students learn by doing hands on measurement. I also need a journal for them to record results.
If you are willing to fund this project not only will this years students benefit by being able to hear good measurement literature but also by having nice new measurement materials to get hands on practice essential to learning to measure. Please consider funding this for our youngest learners. Thanks for your help!
