Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Workbooks are important instructional tools that allow children to reinforce concepts. Budget cuts have been so drastic in public schools that we can not even count on having basic workbooks for the students to practice learned skills at home with their families.

I am teaching in a kindergarten ESL/CTT (cooperative team teaching) class in a high-need, low income community.

My population consists of 11 students with IEP's (individualized education plans) and 14 general education students in need of ESL services. I teach the ESL (English as a second language) component. This is my 11th year teaching and I look forward to working with a similar group of students next year. Many of my students are at multiple disadvantages because they not only have special needs such as speech and occupational therapy, but English is also not their dominant language.

My Project

In class I make sure that my students work the majority of the time with hands-on projects and activities versus paper and pencil assignments. Workbook tasks however, are equally important for practice and reinforcement. I like to send many of these worksheets home as homework so that parents know what we are learning in class as well as them being able to work with their children and provide support. The workbooks that I am requesting will provide practice in letter writing, sight words, math concepts, and a variety of literacy skills. I also requested a few book titles that I will use as read alouds and to accompany the storytelling kits that I received from generous donors.

The materials that I am requesting are basic items that are much needed for practice and reinforcement.

These workbooks will be very beneficial to my students' academic development. I thank you in advance for your consideration and support!
