Kindergartners Are Ready to Read About Racism!

Help me give my students a library in our classroom that promotes diversity and starts to reflect the students using it! We are looking for books that promote restorative conversations, honor black lives, and are age appropriate.

My Students

I have been delighted with the most ambitious, hardworking, and persistent kindergarteners in the Pacific Northwest. This unique bunch came together to create our integrated kindergarten program. This program is comprised of students with special needs and typically developing peers working together to navigate the wonderful land of kindergarten.

We are a community of thoughtful, intentional, and tolerant citizens who value and appreciate the individual needs of each person that walks through our door.

We are accomplishing more than academics, we are striving for loving and intellectual community members.

I am so thankful for my class, they are ready and eager for any challenge I bring forth. They explore, create, and engage in every activity. The smiles and laughter make each day worth it. Watching them grow and learn has been the highlight of my year.

My Project

As an educator, I am teaching, informing, and building up the next generation of leaders. Kindergarten is the foundation for many and plants seeds that will forever shape students as learners and citizens. I take this role seriously and intend to create learners that are ready to seek justice, understand where the world has come from and where it is going next.

Thinking and reflecting on the books I read to my class this past year, I realized that I am not doing enough to promote kindergartners that understand and shut down racism.

Here I am, taking the next step for my class: building a library that looks like them. I am building a library that shows my white students how important our black community is. I want to build a library that shows racism is not welcome here. I want to build a library that allows us to imagine and strive for a different future.
