My students need 2 Tag reading systems, 2 story wands, 4 collections of leveled books and some Tag books that they can read on their own. The story wands will help them to discuss the books.
Everyone loves feeling successful! My goal is to help my students feel successful in their reading. I just received my masters in reading, and am dedicated to make my classroom a literacy rich environment with independent readers. In order for them to be independent they need the right materials.
I have a full classroom of 30 kindergarten students in a very diverse neighborhood in Chicago.
The students in my classroom come from over 11 different countries. For many of them, this is their first school experience. All my students are at different academic levels. They love school and enjoy learning new things. The expression on their faces is priceless when they realize they have learned to do something. My favorite part about teaching kindergarten is teaching my students to read. By the end of the school year, every child in my classroom will be a reader!!
My Project
There are many steps to teaching children to read. First students need to understand the concepts of print and be able to track words. The Tag is a great tool for this. Students who are at the emergent reading stage can independently use this tool to track print and find words they are familiar with. Once students learn all their letters and sounds that are ready to begin to decode words. They needs books that have many simple short words for them to read on their own. It is essential for students to have books that they are able to read independently and feel successful at. Once students have mastered decoding of words, they need more challenging books and activities to challenge them. I have requested some higher leveled books as well as some story wands to get the students to discuss the books they read with each other.
Kindergarten is the where the foundation of reading is made.
It is so important for students to love reading. It is also important for my classroom to be filled with a variety of reading materials to reach the needs of all students. Something as simple as a new book or tool to help a child get excited about reading means the world to a five year old. It is something they will talk about for a whole week!
