Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students hail from a small community tucked away between factories and wilderness, on Chicago's southeast side. They come from different backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is the fact that they want to do their best in school. They are excited to learn about the world around them and I aim to make their learning experience engaging and meaningful.

I want to guide my students to become socially conscious individuals dedicated to empowering others, as well as themselves.

Despite their age, it is important for them to begin learning about injustice and empathy so they can be tolerant, helpful individuals in the future.

My Project

My students need over a dozen books, including stories about Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and Cesar Chavez, as well as books about individuals with differences in appearance, children with disabilities, and families living in poverty to help them learn about tolerance. Through different stories, my students will learn about how to treat those that have been discriminated against with empathy. Besides a dozen bins to store our books, we also need various non-perishable food items, such as canned soup, granola bars, juice, peanut butter, fruit bowls, etc., to begin a Read to Feed program in our classroom.

Once students learn about the inequity around the world, they will want to do something to make it a better place.

After listening to the books we will receive, students will discuss how one character's extraordinary deed resulted in change. Since we will end our unit discussing poverty, we will discuss ways we can help the less fortunate in our community.

Using the non-perishable food items we will receive, we will begin a Read to Feed program. After reading a determined amount of books for the week, each student will then choose a food item to donate to our local food pantry and will receive a note of recognition for his/her contribution. Students will then share what they have learned about exemplifying tolerance with their families and those that wish to donate additional items will be welcome to. This will not only encourage them to read, but it will also teach them about helping others in times of need.
