This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten is awesome! My students are very eager and excited to learn everyday! They have an immense curiosity for everything and are very capable of achieving any goal that they set!

I am a Kindergarten bilingual teacher at a school where most of our students are struggling readers and are one or more years below grade level in reading.

It is my number one priority to get my students reading on grade level or above so that they are well prepared for first grade. I am at a low socioeconomic school where many of our students have tremendous learning gaps. Many of our students have difficult home lives so it is extremely important to provide them with a safe, caring and positive learning environment. My students love to write and tell their stories and although they are in extreme need of intervention in this area I know that they are very capable of succeeding and improving their writing.

My Project

The literacy block in our daily schedule is one of the most important parts of our daily activities. Aside from reading, writing is a huge component of the literacy block and it is an area of focus for our kindergarten students. Our writing center is in great need of assistance! We need to motivate these young writers to express themselves in writing and to let their creativity rise through their stories. I would really like to provide my students with Draw and Write journals to accommodate for the different levels of writing in my class. Some students are still in the pre writing stage so they need an area where they can draw and begin to write their compositions. My students also need Spanish Word Journals so that they can write new vocabulary words in an organized manner. Vocabulary language is a huge part of early literacy learning. We are also in need of word spacers to improve their writing, writing paper, write and wipe pockets and draw and write touch boards for centers.

My students love to write but they are in need of a lot of intervention in this area before they get to first grade.

I want my students to have the materials that will allow them to take ownership and responsibility. Having journals will allow them to have a personal space where they can practice their writing and write their ideas and adventures.
