Kindergarten Science Sensory Table

My students need a sand and water table and a sensory mat to help them explore a variety of science materials such as soil, sand, water, magnets, leaves, and so much more.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Mirana's classroom raised $339

My Students

Do you remember the feeling of sand falling through your fingers? Doesn't it feel good to get some dirt under your fingernails every once in a while? My kindergarten students are eager to dig their hands in and learn through their senses and the sensory table will allow them to do this every day.

I teach kindergarten at a public charter school in NYC.

Our population reflects the neighboring community. Most students qualify for free lunch, many students have special needs, and most(about 98%) are from non-white, immigrant families. We are a new school with limited supplies. We focus on environmental education, bringing students to local field study sites once a week and bringing environmental science into the classroom in a variety of ways. My students are eager to learn about and explore their world. They LOVE digging their hands in soil, planting seeds, and exploring the world through their senses. The sensory table is sure to become a favorite part of the classroom.

My Project

A sensory table (also know as a sand and water table) is a large table with a deep tub that can be filled with any materials. In the past I have filled it with soil, sand, water, paint, oobleck, paper and scissors, magnets, leaves, yarn, rice, beans. The possibilities are endless. Students explore using their senses. They get to dig their hands in and feel the sand running through their fingers or the water running down their elbows. This is especially important for city kids who often don't get to have these experiences outside of school. The learning opportunities are endless...what floats/sinks, what happens when sand and water mix, what happens when blue water and yellow water mix, what happens to leaves when they dry out? Since we are an environmental science school, the sensory table will provide important connections to our studies outside the classroom and a way to present natural materials to explore in the classroom. I am also requesting 1 sensory mat to put under the table to keep the area clean.

A sensory table provides opportunities that contribute to a child's social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

These tables should be a part of every early childhood classroom. When we get this table it will impact not only the students in my classroom this year but students in the future as well. It will be used for years to come to inspire new scientists to make discoveries through hands-on experiences.
