Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are amazed when I tell them that they are authors and illustrators. I teach Kindergarten at a Chicago public school in the south-east side of Chicago. Most of my students come from low-income homes and books for most of my students are not something that are readily available.

I encourage reading in my classroom with a well stocked library that the students use on a daily basis. The students add to the library by creating and writing class books on a weekly basis. The students continually go back to read the books they authored and illustrated and really enjoy them. However at this point in time the books are bound together by staples which don't always go through all the pages. There are sharp edges which I use masking tape to cover, so the students don't cut their hands. Some of the books I continually have to "re-bind" because the students enjoy them so much.

If I had a binder in the classroom the students could enjoy the books without my fear of the students cutting their hands. In addition if I had a laminator the pages could be saved from being ripped by reading the book too many times. The young authors in my classroom could truly enjoy their own books for a lifetime.
