My Project

This year, I began a K-3 SEL program room within an elementary school. This classroom provides more structure, direct instruction in SEL, and trauma informed response and care. The classroom has been successful in decrease disruptive behaviors, increasing access to academics, and has significantly increased the inclusion within the general education classrooms. With the success of the program, a K only classroom will be opened to start incoming students off within the program that they will benefit from, and hopefully decrease the amount of years needed for the specialized program and increase amount of time within general education. With the start of a new program, many items will be needed to start up the classroom from scratch. I am requesting Innovative STEM Science Kits, Laminator Kit, Floor Cushions, LEGO DUPLO Town Buildable People, and more for a welcoming Kindergarten classroom for social emotional learning.

Teaching in this program has been a challenge, but has also been extremely rewarding.

Watching the students make small and big successes, take pride in their work and themselves, and make lasting friendships has been amazing. Many of the students have significant trauma backgrounds, so it has been my pleasure to be their welcoming, happy, and safe space. The relationships I’ve built with these students have renewed my love for teaching. I cannot wait to be able to build up the program from a K level.
