Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Kindergarten is a crucial foundational year for students to build their phonemic awareness. As students learn to identify and manipulate the sounds in words, they are building their underlying reading and writing skills for a lifetime of learning.

Our students need manipulatives and decodable texts to practice blending and decoding words to become fluent readers.

Hands-on opportunities to manipulate the sounds in words with spin-and-read phonetic reading blocks will help students translate their individual letter sound knowledge to successfully reading words. Sets of phonics game flash cards will increase engagement and accuracy during reading and spelling activities. As students use these materials, they will not only be practicing these skills and increasing fluency, but also become more confident when approaching reading tasks.

Decodable readers will allow students to expand on their phonemic awareness by engaging with texts that are accessible, containing words that they are able to sound out successfully. Multiple sets of these texts will allow us to ensure that every child working in a small group is able to read from an actual book and build their identity as a reader.
