Kindergarten Needs Trapezoid Desks Please

My students need 5 learning circle desks.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Perez's classroom raised $625

This project is fully funded

I am a kindergarten teacher at a charter school. Our school services students of low income and middle income families. We are a fairly new school that relies heavily on fund raising, community support and parent involvement. Our school is working hard to provide our students with a high quality education despite limited resources. Our student population is extremely special because it is so diverse. We have students from Ghana, Iceland, Poland, Australia, Switzerland and South America to name a few. We are our own mini United Nations. Students and staff alike benefit from this environment. Our school teaches by example that we live in a community rich in diversity.

My classroom is furnished with hand-me-downs that were used when the school was a middle school in the early nineties. I have parents who say that the same tables were in the class when they were in school. Currently I have 3 large tables that take up too much space, and I can only accommodate 4 children at each table. If I put more than 4 children at the larger tables my students become cramped and their class work overlaps, which then leads to restlessness. Along with this, I have 2 smaller tables that can accommodate 2 and 3 kids each. I also have smaller tables that I use for students who need their own space in order to complete their work. This arrangement makes it difficult for me to lead small group sessions because individual groups will not fit at one table. In short the work space that these tables provide is not conducive to individual or group activities.

Having a group style set up in a classroom is difficult unless you have the right furniture, which I do not have. I have always wanted individual desks in my classroom, because it allows students there own space and helps them focus on their work. Individual desks are a difficult concept in kindergarten, because you want them to learn to work with other students. The learning circle desk allows flexible seating for all teaching styles. The fact that you can move the desk according to what you are teaching is the best of both worlds. You can still provide students with a small group environment and an individual work space if a child needs it. The trapezoidal style desk will allow for a more conducive learning environment for my students. These desk will also allow me to utilize the space in my classroom.

I am currently in my fifth year of teaching. I have struggled with the set up of my class since my first year and our school does not have it the budget to buy me new tables. The large tables and the sprinkle of small table do not flow and make it difficult to encourage small group work. Most of the time our small group work is done on flower using white boards to do our work on. It would be nice to have new tables in the classroom, but more importantly I would like to provide my students with a better learning environment.
