This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students experience inquiry based learning with a nature study unit! Your donation will provide paint, markers, scissors, books, carry-alls and more—items we will use to infuse art into hands-on projects that will advance learning and increase achievement of core curriculum.

My kindergarteners attend a high poverty school.

The student population is diverse culturally, economically and linguistically. Some of the students have special learning needs and are fully included along with typical learning students. Our classroom is one in which the children feel safe to take risks when asking or answering questions, or presenting something they've made to the class. Empathy toward others is encouraged, as well as is kindness. This year my students will participate in a nature study unit. The concepts covered include weather, seasons, earth, habitats, and plant life. I would like them to collaborate on a project in which they will use their senses to experience nature in its various forms, and express what they have learned through hands-on activities and creating works of art. They will take ownership of their learning by responding to questions such as: I wonder what would happen if..., How could we find out..., and... Would you like to try?

My Project

This unit will incorporate all modalities of learning: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. In this way, all learners can experience success. Students will be able to make connections between what they are learning and their own lives, and will be able to apply much of what they learn in the real world: their own homes and community. They will think critically about challenges such as how to take care of the earth, and how to conserve water. They will work together in small and large groups to plan, design, and create murals, gardens, dramatic presentations, and so on. They will communicate what they have learned through journal writing, illustrations, sculpting, collage, and oral presentation. Scholastic Let’s Find Out magazines will be a great tool to research the topics, as will nature themed books. Craft materials such as reusable totes, paper dolls, and collages pots, and manipulatives such as toy animals, will stir their senses and provide opportunities to collaborate.

Your donation will provide my curious five year olds with art supplies, craft and collage items, nature themed reading material, manipulatives and so much more!

Inspired by the goals of the Lily Sarah Grace Fund, this project seeks to weave art and science together using an inquiry based approach to learning. Your support will help my bring my students' learning to its fullest potential. Thank you!
