I teach a group of 50 kindergarteners in a half day program in Northern Virginia.
I work in an inclusion classroom. They are an amazing group of kids who are also very excited about technology. We currently use my personal iPad during the "Daily 5." The Daily 5 is a student driven management structure designed to fully engage students in reading the writing. It is a literacy structure that allows for differentiation in the classroom and provides consistency. It is a integrated literacy instruction and classroom management system for use during reading and writing workshops. It is a system of five literacy tasks that teachers students independence. My students also use classroom computers to listen to stories, use phonics programs, and play the school math program "ST-math." Our school is full of amazing teachers who love what they do. Each teacher in our school goes above and beyond for their students.
My Project
Every day students will have the opportunity to use the iPads. We will start small with iPads by using them during our "Daily 5" time. Students will be using the iPads to read and listen to books. Also they will be allowed to play literacy and phonics games to reinforce the skills we are learning. I would like to branch out and have the students use "iMovie" to record their classmates reading and retelling stories. I will assess the clips to determine how well the class is retaining literary concepts. As the year goes on, I would strive to incorporate iPads into additional subjects like math and science.
In a half day kindergarten program we only have 3 hours to teach everything the students need to know.
These iPads will allow for greater exposure to technology that many of my students are not privileged to have at home. They will allow me to maximize every second that I have with them to make learning a little more fun :).
