Kindergarten Listening and Read Along Center

My students need all of the materials to help set up a listening and read along center in order to provide them with a fun and independant time to interact with books.

My Students

I have 16 kindergarten students at a large inner city school district in Warren, Ohio. Predominately the students in my classroom come from a low socio-economic background. This is exemplified in that all my students receive free breakfast and free lunch.

The students are all very excited about learning, especially with hands-on activities.

They love coming to school, and love to hear stories. We have an extensive literacy program, and I'd love to enhance the literature we read by creating a listening and read along center where four students at a time can use headphones to hear a story beening read while following along with the actual text. I am asking for the equipment for the listening center as well as both fiction and non fiction books that are accompanied on CDs on a variety of topics and themes to engage all of the students and provide them rich literacy experiences.

My Project

Having these resources will allow me to create a listening center where students can hear books being read to them and follow along with the actual text. Many students from my district come with very little exposure to books or reading, so because of this, it is important for us to provide as many different experiences for the children to interact with books. With the creation of this center, four students at a time can participate at the listening center. More exposure to books being read helps to increase children's vocabulary and even helps with high frequency words. This should also generate rich conversations not only between teacher to student but also between student to student. All in all it will greatly impact the reading level of my students.
