My Students

My classroom is filled with energetic, curious five and six year old students who are excited about learning. Our classroom "comes alive" each morning as they enter, full of enthusiasm, energy and joy.

The kindergarten students in my classroom come from very diverse backgrounds.

Twenty-seven of my 36 students receive free/reduced-price lunch services since we are a Title I school. I have 8 students who speak English as a second language and 6 students enrolled in Exceptional Student Education programs.

My Project

"My body won't stop moving! It keeps jumping around!". These are the words of a very self-aware kindergarten student. I laughed and answered, "I can see that! How can I help you to concentrate?". This was the beginning of our problem-solving session.

I listened carefully as my students explained how it is "hard to be still".

Soon after this conversation, I raised some of our classroom tables to make "standing tables" and provided clipboards and an area to stretch out and write on the floor. This project will give my students the opportunity to safely move while seated. These Hokki stools and ball chairs increase core strength, which will benefit the motor control and overall health of my students.

I am committed to teaching my students to make healthy choices and to get lots of physical activity each day. These safe, options for movement will help my young learners to concentrate on their lessons along with their health.
