Kindergarten Garden

My students need books and games about growing healthy food, and mini greenhouse kits to grow their own plants to set in our kindergarten garden.

My Students

Do you remember how exciting it was the first time you grew something from a tiny seed? Help us get matching funds from FEED USA to teach our children how plants grow. Many of our students have little understanding about where our food comes from before it arrives in the grocery store.

My 24 students are a diverse group, and because we are a school of choice they come from neighborhoods all over town.

Many of my children are second language learners. We have 120 active kindergarten students who share a small garden with room for vegetables, flowers and some small apple trees.

My Project

These resources will help us to provide hands-on lessons that show our city kids where their food comes from before it lands on the dinner plate. We have the chance to inspire our children to try new fruits and vegetables. It's always more exciting to try something you've grown yourself! The window greenhouses let the students see the part that is normally hidden underground. They will be able to watch seeds sprout and roots spread out in the gel as the seeds grow into plants. The books and games allow us to develop language arts and science skills while learning more about healthy foods and growing plants.

Donations to this project will help encourage healthy eating in our children, and possibly start them off in a hobby that they can enjoy for a lifetime.

Gardening is a fantastic, hands-on way to teach science and nutrition in the great outdoors!
