My Students

Do you remember when you followed your mom to the market and picked out your favorite snack or two? My Kindergarten students would love to pretend to go grocery shopping with fake food items.

My students love to role play in the classroom.

After reading a story, we use puppets to retell or act out the story. They enjoy dressing up like a grown-up using different props that we have at the center. After studying the two famous presidents; George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, we talked about the coins, but they don’t have a concept about money yet. At this age understanding the monetary value is a challenge. Due to the recent downfall in the economy, our community is struggling to make ends meet. Therefore many students are on free lunch or reduced lunch. About 90% of my students eat breakfast and lunch at school.

My Project

With the wonderful shopping baskets full of life sized groceries, the children’s dramatic play station will be the most exciting place to learn. With this project, students will learn the basics of budgeting. Each student will have a small plastic wallet with few dollars to spend. This will limit them in what they can purchase and they will think twice about how much to spend. “Shoppers” will be able to add up the food as it is placed in the shopping basket. (Just like the real market). Cashiers will get a chance to work on the "real" toy cash register that will add up the total. Since role playing is a great way for children to learn, I can’t wait for this project to be funded. Our Kindergarten Farmer’s Market will be a huge success!
