Kindergarten Communication Through Play

My students need a dollhouse complete with furniture and dolls to facilitate play within the classroom.

My Students

My students are energetic 5 year olds who are learning to be part of a community. Our school focuses on building strong literacy and math skills of course, but also knows the importance of being able to get along with others.

The students in my room are learning how to communicate in order to solve problems.

This is such an important life skill, and needs to be implemented along with daily lessons. Children can learn a lot through play which enhances the development of the whole child.

Our school is in a high poverty area, with all students receiving free lunch. Families work hard, but many children do not have access to toys and materials that help develop communication.

My Project

We live in a fast-paced world right now that uses technology daily. While this has many positive effects, it is also causing the loss of personal communication. How many times do we see people out together who are all staring at a screen instead of talking with each other? Our students are not learning how solve problems with peers and adults using communication.

Having a dollhouse in our room will help my students practice the skills necessary to communicate effectively with others.

Our students need to build these skills in order to work cooperatively in groups, and to prepare them for life in the future. In addition, this type of play can help a child work through his or her own personal feelings. In our push to get students to strive academically, we cannot forget that they need the important skill of getting along in society. Learning will only be enhanced if we allow children to practice within a play situation.
