I teach a wonderful group of kindergartners. My students are excited to learn and are full of energy! As an all day kindergarten we have the privilege of developing life long learners.
The families support our school by sending us students that are ready to learn.
My students are kind-hearted, thoughtful and generous. Families are proud to support our teachers. They give their time and talents. It is a very giving, caring place to learn.
My Project
My students begin school in kindergarten completely unfamiliar with the academic set up of a classroom. Desks and chairs are new to them and often do not provide them the movement or comfort that they need to be successful. Students spend much of their energy and concentration just trying to sit appropriately in a chair. If they could choose how and where they wanted to sit, they would be able to spend more energy concentrated on learning.
In the classroom, there is a lot of evidence to support this idea. When my students are expected to sit at their desks and work on a learning task, they often become uncomfortable and distracted and end up off task and not learning. Daily 5 is one time of day where my students are able to find any spot in the room to sit and work. When given the choice, almost all of my students prefer to find a comfortable spot on the floor to stretch out with cozy loungers, arm chairs, and cushions. Imagine if they could choose where to work all the time!
This grant directly impacts educational outcomes of my students in all academic disciplines.
Students would have stronger focus throughout the day, maximizing learning time. It will also affect students in future grade levels as well as staff around our classroom. It could motivate others to make small or large changes in their classroom environments, providing many students with better learning opportunities.
