My Students

Do you remember the awe of learning how to read? You love books and the thought that you can create your own book is so exciting. I want my students to feel that they are not only readers, but writers.

Our students are in an area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.

Most are very hardworking families, working multiple jobs so that they can stand on their own. Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it, and often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. We have students that have military parents, some who have recently lost parents in service. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Many of the staff spend hundreds of their own dollars yearly to provide materials for students and motivational rewards. They continually go above and beyond to help their students.

My Project

I want to help students that I work with learn to write about their feelings and express their thoughts. As a counselor, I strive to reinforce the curriculum that the classroom teacher is teaching. In our school, the kindergarten teachers have a very dynamic writing program. I want to help them motivate the students to express themselves and to practice writing. As we read books about friendship and feelings, they can write and illustrate their own books. These 84 Young Art Idea Journals are perfect! They will be able to keep their writings together and at the end of the year will have a book to take home. Students at this age love to draw! I really like the layout of the books. Each page has an area to write and draw. The more students write, the better writers they will be come. Teachers will also be able to use these with other books they use in class. Teaching is a team effort, and I want to be part of the team.

I am always amazed at how fast this age group learns.

Within a short period of time our teachers have the students progressing in reading and writing at a terrific pace! Presenting the students opportunities to write about what they are interested in will really help! I want to be apart of this metamorphosis. Thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
