Kindergarten Author Studies

My students need a variety of 80+ books written by the same author to engage in author studies throughout the year!

My Students

Everyone has a favorite author of their own. Imagine loving a particular author but not having the option to read more of their stories. This is the problem my students are facing!

My 30 students come from a city school in south eastern Pennsylvania.

For many of them, this will be their first experience in a formal school setting. We are a full-time kindergarten classroom. Due to severe budget cuts, we will be without the support of a classroom aide this year. Many of my students come from low-income households, and our school is a Title I school. My students, however, love to kick back and relax in our classroom library with a great book. They are enthusiastic about learning new things and love engaging in classroom discussions about their favorite books. Despite the challenges my students face, they come to school eager to learn.

My Project

An important aspect of becoming lifelong readers is finding an author you really enjoy. As a young child, I did not enjoy reading. I would much rather have been outside playing with my friends. It was not until I came across the author by the name of James Patterson during college that I found my love for reading. As soon as I picked up one of his books, my outlook on reading completely changed. He opened my eyes to the world of creativity and imagination. I want my students to have this same experience. The books I have requested come from 14 different authors. Every 2-3 weeks, we would study one of the 14 authors. With the wide variety of authors, it is my hope that my students will find their passion for reading the same way I did when I picked up my very first Patterson book. Each of these authors are unique in their own way. By supporting this project, my students will be given the opportunity to explore the various authors and develop their love for reading.

My goal as a teacher is to create lifelong learners.

In order to do so, I need to develop lifelong readers. The more exposure my students have to a range of authors, the better chance I have at achieving my goal. By providing my students more opportunities to find an author they connect to, the more likely I am to instill a love for reading within my students. Not only will this project effect my current students, but all four kindergarten classes this year and for many years to come.
