Our kindergarten class is looking to again boost its technology acquisitions. The old equipment is outdated and now two kids can share the screen in search for the alphabet and play literacy and math games. Do you remember what it was like to have old or even no computers?
My students are five and six years old with inquisitive minds.
Twenty three percent of the school is economically disadvantaged, and six percent are English learners. In my class I have one child with specific educational needs, and five students below grade level. Despite the odds, they are the new generation of kids who were born in the age of the iPhone. They really do know what desktops and laptops are, and with the advent of tablets, classrooms around the U.S. will see a depletion of desktops and laptops. However even with my low socio-economic students, technology seems secondary. I feel that technology is the future and if I deliver it with an edge, I can present it as a helpful advantage to an already broad education
My Project
My class utilizes the computers at least twice a day for over an hour. These students know how to operate sophisticated computer equipment and the updated technology will inspire them to want to share.
In this fast paced world of iPhones and iPads, the path to literacy is sometimes paved by access to knowledge through sophisticated sources such as the Internet and gaming. With a new computer monitor, I feel I can inspire these kids to latch on to educational games and activities on the Internet and games the school purchases. I believe the more technology, the better equipped these kids will be in the world.
I really believe whole heartily as a computer tech head myself, that these children will have better access to knowledge they may or may not get at home.
I am a firm believer in technology and even inspired by gurus like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, knowing that they impacted several generations to come. I hope I can help expand these students' horizons.
