Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 22 energetic kindergarten and transitional kindergarten (TK) students who come to school with many questions and eager to learn. They are very creative and inquisitive. They enjoy reading, writing, and art, but most of all they love to learn through play!

For many, my classroom is their first school experience so I need to provide rich, developmentally appropriate, hands-on learning experiences that will ignite a love for learning.

Although some face challenges, they come to school ready to soak up new knowledge!

My Project

I am requesting the Units of Study in Phonics, Grade K. This resource will be used daily as part of my balanced literacy curriculum and will align with the units that I use to teach reading and writing.

The kindergarten phonics program purchased by my district was not created by kindergarten teachers!

It is very evident that the creators have never worked with young children! The lessons teach phonics in isolation and do not connect reading and writing to children's lives or literature. Those lessons do not align with my belief of how children should learn to read/write.

The Units of Study in Phonics, Grade K were created by Lucy Calkins, an expert in the teaching of reading and writing, and her colleagues who work with kindergarten students across the nation. The lessons in these units connect phonics and writing to children’s names and things that are important to them. These lessons will make phonics fun and effective for all children!
