Kids with Intellectual Disabilities Can Read? You Bet!
My students need a set of First Little Readers and a Building Language Photo Library, which are at their developmental level to build foundational skills.
Do you remember learning to read? There are so many exciting moments in a child's life where they learn foundational skills to unlock the power of reading.
Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.
Due to low enrollment and changes within our school district, our school was one step away from being closed last year. Despite the challenges that my students face, they are incredibly resilient. The seven students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as autism and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, desire to learn, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.
My Project
My students are all pre-readers and need to build basic skills in order to access books and the world around them. We are so blessed that our classroom is filled with books, but unfortunately they are too challenging for my students. The basic book set, alphabet book set, and language building cards will help my students to build these skills. My seven students need to build knowledge of letters, letter sounds, and sight words so that they can grow to be as independent as possible.
Reading is a basic life skill that we all need to be independent in our world.
These materials will help to build these skills for my seven students. Please help them to discover the world of PRINT and to develop a love of reading!
