This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in our fifth grade classroom is run by the students with the teacher simply facilitating. This year our goal is to teach reading through integration of history and science. "Reading is dreaming with open eyes." I want my students to use their imaginations to dream big!

They teach me new lessons every day and they are all so eager to learn.

My students live their lives according to Stephen Covey's 7 habits. My students are in charge of themselves and have learned the importance of setting goals and achieving them. Our school as a whole is a safe environment that welcomes everyone. The teachers believe in cohesion and we all work as one big family. Our students come from broken homes and our goal is to not only support them and teach them, but to ensure that they are given every opportunity possible to succeed.

My Project

These books, Journal of Sean Sullivan and Battle of Bull Run, will be used to teach reading through historical events. Our goal is to gather materials that we can not only teach to the literature and informational common core standards, but do so in a way that we can effectively incorporate history. Through extensive planning with my teammates, we have mapped out curriculum and carefully chosen the books that we think will be the most beneficial for our goals this year. These books will be used to teach reading and comprehension through history.

Our hope is to improve reading fluency and comprehension through the introduction of new texts, as well as teach them the importance of historical events.

From our first DonorsChoose in August, our kids are ecstatic about the Mayflower, all because we read an amazing piece of literature. We hope to do the same thing with the Civil War and Westward Expansion.
