Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school librarian, I make a positive impact on all 600 students in our learning community. My campus is a Title I school, and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. They show up to the library bright-eyed and eager to communicate, collaborate, and learn. The library is the heart of the school and a safe place where students can build a love of reading. My students have a wide variety of learning styles and levels. Each one is unique, and everyone in the library respects each other. I care about my students, and they know it!
My goal is to encourage students to become independent and lifelong readers and learners.
At the library, students enjoy reading a good book, being innovators, problem solvers, and critical thinkers. I especially love that they are creative and try their best at everything that comes their way. I want my students to remember me when they grow up, so I make them feel welcome, safe, and important on a daily basis.
My Project
I am passionate about instilling a love of reading in children. I believe that students should be able to read books that include diversity and representation. My library is in need of more of these books that will benefit them in many ways. It's simple: We Need Diverse Books.
Reading books that represent different abilities, beliefs, and skin colors will help my students accept and understand the world around them.
As a school Librarian, one of my goals is to give students a wide range of diverse literature that is inclusive to all. These books are not only important to children, but to all. Having them available in the library will give access to students, faculty, and staff to read. We know that children's books can act as mirrors and windows to the world. Mirrors for students to see themselves and windows to see someone else's life. This type of self-reflection and the opportunity to read or hear about different lives is essential.
