Kids in TK Need Dramatic Play

My students need dramatic play items to facilitate imaginative play which will support their social emotional development.

My Students

This upcoming school year I will be teaching a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class which is quite different than a straight Kindergarten class. TK is the first of a two year kindergarten program which services 4 year olds whose birthdays fall between Sept 2nd-Dec 2nd. Due to their young age, many will be experiencing school for the first time. Many will be making the transition from home day cares to a very structured school setting. They will be searching for "fun" things to engage in and enjoy exploring some of the more rigorous tasks TK has to offer.

TK students are developmentally different than typical kindergartners and therefore require a different teaching approach and tools for learning.

My students will be making progress in their social and emotional development which will directly impact their success as a student. One thing that aids in this development is a dedicated time to engage in imaginative play.

My Project

I have chosen a variety of materials to provide a starting point for their imaginations to soar. As they play pretend, they will develop their social and emotional skills, academic skills, problem solving, and language skills. Imaginative play is crucial to their learning in TK.

The dramatic play costumes will help set the stage for different scenarios with choices of career uniforms; a trip to the doctors office, a visit from the mail carrier, taking the pet to the veterinarian, flying on an airplane, etc.

The pretend play food and flatware can support their learning of healthy meals and food groups, as well as playing "house" or "chef" to serve meals. The cash register is perfect for playing "grocery store" and exposure to play money and math skill practice.

I envision students using the puppets to create story lines and dialogue around everyday life and using them to put on shows for their classmates. The diverse baby doll set will encourage family dynamics in their playing and help represent the differing ethnicity's of my students. The themed artifacts such as, gardening, cleaning, repairing, cooking will all further their engagement in these activities.

Much of what the students pretend, can be tied to topics taught during structured time and will strengthen the connection they make with their learning.
