Kids Can Keep Calm & Learn On!

My students need a variety of items, mainly books and games, that can help them learn essential social skills, as well as develop impulse control and coping skills.

My Students

My students WANT to learn, and they NEED school in order to change the future that has been laid out for them. But, they have yet to develop the essential skills that will help them be successful!

I work at a Title 1 School with a very special population.

We are primarily African American, with a small percentage of Hispanic and Vietnamese students. Many of our students come from families living below the poverty line, and school is their opportunity to "change their stars." Unfortunately, a high percentage of our students have yet to learn essential skills that are needed to excel in the classroom -- from conflict resolution, to impulse control, anger management, emotional regulation and coping skills. The lack of these skills show themselves in other ways -- fighting, arguing with teachers, refusal to do work or a fear of asking for help, an inability to focus in class, as well as trouble sharing and getting along with others. They are truly wonderful kids that need the best educational experience we can give them. Without that, I'm afraid the vicious cycle of living in poverty will continue.

My Project

These resources with be used for classroom lessons, as well as small group experiences. The books will be a part of a larger curriculum with our younger students. They will be used to lead activities and open up discussions about how to appropriately handle situations. Many of my students focus on the behaviors of others and fail to take responsibility for their role -- my hope is that these books can assist me in teach that. The games will be used during small groups so that the students can learn skills without feeling "bored" with the normal activities. Games get the students engaged and they learn without even realizing. Reproducibles can be used in the classroom, in small group, or when working with students individually. Really -- these are jacks of MANY trades.

My kids can learn.

My kids are smart. And my kids are YOUNG. They have their whole lives ahead of them. The scary part is that some doors can close for them before they even know they're open. My hope is that these materials will help facilitate change in my students so that they are able to function in a school setting and learn to LOVE learning. This way, when they leave me for Middle School, the sky is the limit and they are prepared for success.
