My students need an iPad mini 2 so they can be a producer of technology and not a consumer of it. They can write computer codes too!

My Students
Imagine having a 7 year old proudly hand you an iPad to show you what he has created. You look down and expect a drawing,or maybe a story. Instead you see a completely functional computer game that they have created themselves. They have just accomplished something at 7, that you have yet to do.
There are 24 busy learners in my class, almost equally divided between girls and boys.
A few of my students are currently living with family members while they become more financially stable. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I have two special needs students and two students who speak English as their second language.
We are always busy learning something, and are very rarely if ever quiet!
My Project
The purpose of this project is to increase the amount of technology available to the students in my classroom to learn computational literacy through learning how to write computer code. By learning computational literacy, students will increase their reading, writing, and mathematic skills by having an authentic place to apply what they have learned. My students will have to read the instructions given to them (within the program and those written by their peers), write clear instructions of their own, and correctly count the moves that need to be made to complete the assignments.
My students spend 30 minutes a week in a computer lab with a computer lab aide currently playing educational games. I am working on training my students and the aide on how to maneuver through the website and complete the assignments. By acquiring two iPad minis, I will be able to offer a time during our regular class day to continue their online assignments.
T
As my students learn how to write codes, I am no longer teaching my students to be a "consumer of technology" but a "creator" of it.
Students will also learn how to problem solve, preserve, collaborate, and create. All of these attributes are desired from their upcoming teachers, professors, and employers.
